Most two-day lake itineraries look alike: arrive on day one, get up early on day two for sunrise, then rush home. We tried rearranging it.
The biggest change was dropping the sunrise. It depends heavily on conditions, so the return on lost sleep is unreliable. In its place: the lakeside path, starting at half past seven.
Do not schedule the exposed stretch for the afternoon
The second change was giving up the afternoon. Between twelve and three, go indoors or into shade — avoiding both the hard light and the peak of the day-trip coaches.

- Day one: afternoon arrival, an evening walk along the shore
- Day two: lakeside path at 7.30, indoors after midday
- Return: two hours of buffer
- Dropped: sunrise, too dependent on conditions
The third change was the buffer: leave two empty hours before setting off home, with nothing scheduled, for traffic and the unexpected.
Tested end to end, the itinerary is less dense — and rather more of it stays with you.
