Autumn destination lists look much the same every year, and the problem is that everywhere on them is famous. So we ranked differently: by visitors per square kilometre rather than search volume.
The first group is secondary sites deep in mountain country. They usually sit within an hour’s drive of a famous one, with similar autumn colour and perhaps a third of the visitors.
The second group: along the water
The second is small towns along river systems. Their advantage is depth — visitors spread naturally along the bank, so even a decent total does not feel crowded.
The most effective way to avoid crowds is not finding somewhere nobody knows. It is finding a time nobody can stay.— A photographer who shoots autumn every year

- Ranking basis: visitors per square kilometre
- Format: all workable as a day trip or overnight
- Best window: weekday mornings, or the week after a holiday
- Avoid: the three days either side of a public holiday
Timing matters more than place
Those we spoke to agree: when you go matters more than where. The same place on a weekday morning and a weekend afternoon can be two different experiences.
If weekends are your only option, put the weight of the day in the morning and leave the central area before two.
